I’ve been learning lately that it’s not enough to stay away from poor life choices. If the focus is only avoiding or running away it’s inevitable that you’ll get sucked back in. It’s like a magnet unless you’re running towards something. Breaking free and gaining momentum takes turning your face towards the light. Not focusing on the shadows. For me, those shadows have been heavy and dark for some time and I’m learning to look towards the light. The shadows will always be there, it’s what gives life so much depth and makes the light so much more beautiful.
I’m choosing to be today who I want to be tomorrow and that has been helping me make the most of every choice. Instead of saying ‘someday’ or ‘tomorrow’, it’s making the tough choices in the moment.
That common Bible verse makes more sense to me as I get older, “Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.”
Excellent harmony. I want that.
